What
is mental health
Mental health
is the emotional and spiritual resilience that enables us to enjoy
life and survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive
sense of well being and an underlying belief in our own and each
other's dignity and worth.
Mental ill health
can occur when our sense of well being is undermined and our resilience
fails us.
When this happens
it may cause us to experience disturbing thoughts or feelings which
can overwhelm us to such an extent that it begins to disrupt our
day to day lives and perhaps the lives of those around us.
At this point
it is important to talk to someone about how we are feeling - this
might be a close friend, relative or our family doctor.
Most people
recover from mental health difficulties and others experience recurring
problems.
Mental ill health
is common. One in four adults and one in five children experience
a mental health difficulty in the course of a year.
Stigma
and discrimination - There remains profound misunderstanding
about mental health across the population as a whole. Many people
are fearful of mental ill health, mistaking a human facet as something
out of the ordinary and indeed sometimes dangerous. The truth is
that very few, less that 1% in fact, of those who are mentally ill
are likely to physically harm someone else.

As part of its health promotion projects, Scarborough & Ryedale
Mind is working in partnership with Tees & North East Yorkshire
NHS Trust to bring art to the local community. The aim of our exhibition
is to encourage communities to accept mental ill health as both
ordinary and part of a human being human.
